How the plan is calculated
Money needed up front
This is the modeled payment at the start of a lease or loan, or the full price for a cash purchase. The savings estimate uses money already set aside, what you add each month and any return you choose to assume.
Ongoing monthly cost
Finance payments and estimated running costs are checked against your chosen share of take-home income. Cash purchases also have a separate income threshold based on the purchase price. Passing these checks is not a lending decision or a complete review of your finances.
A conditional timeline
The model checks when both the upfront money and the income threshold are met. It assumes the item’s costs stay fixed while your stated savings and income assumptions continue. An income shortfall may remain even after you save the upfront amount.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- How do I start planning for an item?
- Choose an item and review its upfront and monthly costs. Then enter your take-home pay, money already set aside, and what you can save each month. The plan checks the savings target and income limit separately, using the acquisition method and assumptions shown on the page.
- Why does the roadmap use two separate tests?
- Because they fail independently, and people usually only check one. Someone can have the deposit for a supercar years before their income can absorb the payments, insurance, and servicing. Someone else can comfortably afford the monthly cost but has nothing saved. Checking only the price tells you nothing about which situation you are in, and the two are fixed by completely different actions.
- What percentage of income should go to a luxury purchase?
- This calculator uses planning settings, not universal affordability rules. You can change the monthly-cost percentage. For watches, handbags and jewelry bought in cash, it also applies a fixed purchase-price limit of 25% of annual take-home pay. Both assumptions are shown with your plan; neither accounts for your complete financial situation.
- Is the projected date a prediction?
- No. It is an extrapolation of the figures you enter, assuming steady income growth and steady returns. No real career or market behaves that way. The value is in the comparison between scenarios — which lever actually moves the date — rather than in the date itself.
- Does this replace financial advice?
- It does not, and it is not intended to. This is a calculator that performs stated arithmetic on numbers you provide. It does not know your tax position, debts, dependants, job security, or goals, and it makes no recommendation about whether any purchase is wise. For decisions of this size, speak to a qualified adviser.
