The bag

Boutique price is what you pay new. Resale is what the market pays today, and the starting point for every projection.

List price before sales tax.

40% below retail. Projection starts here.

Where did you buy it?

Buying pre-owned skips the first owner's depreciation entirely.

How long you keep it

Cost of keeping it

Sales tax and the consignment commission are never recovered. Together they decide the result more than the bag does.

$383 on this purchase, and never recovered.

Resale platforms take 15–40%. Selling privately is cheaper and slower.

A scheduled personal-articles rider, roughly 1–1.5% of value.

You recover 31% of what the bag cost you. It does not break even within 5 years at these assumptions — which is the normal outcome, not a failure of the bag.

Value versus what you actually keep

The gap between the two lines is sales tax, commission, insurance, and reconditioning.

How the numbers work

The four costs that decide it

01

The consignment commission

The largest deduction by a wide margin, and larger than the equivalent fee on any other asset this site covers. A platform taking 25% of a $6,000 sale keeps $1,500. On bags that resell near retail, the commission alone is the difference between a gain and a loss.

02

Sales tax

Paid at purchase, never recovered at sale. At 8.5% on a $7,000 bag that is $595 gone before the bag leaves the boutique, and it is the reason a bag must appreciate several percent just to return you to even.

03

Reconditioning

Charged in lumps rather than continuously, which is why this calculator applies it only in the years it falls due. Lambskin and canvas need attention years before grained calfskin or coated canvas do, and resale grades wear far more harshly than most owners expect.

04

Condition, colour, and completeness

Not a line item, but the biggest single swing in the resale figure. An excellent-condition bag in a house-standard colour with box and receipt can sell for 20 to 30% more than the same bag worn hard in a seasonal colourway. The estimates here model the former.

Frequently asked questions

Do luxury handbags hold their value?
A few do; most do not. Hermès quota bags — Birkin, Kelly, Constance — resell for roughly double boutique retail, and a handful of others such as Goyard totes clear retail because distribution is deliberately restricted. Everything else resells for less than it cost, typically 40 to 75% of retail after five years. The gap between houses is far wider than the gap between models within a house.
What commission do resale platforms take?
Consignment sites and boutiques take roughly 15 to 40% of the sale price, with the lower rates reserved for the most in-demand references and the highest-value items. Direct-buyout offers are faster and lower still. Selling privately avoids the commission entirely but exposes you to payment fraud and to authentication disputes, which is precisely what the commission pays for.
Why does this calculator include sales tax?
Because it is real money that never comes back. Sales tax on a $12,000 bag at 8.5% is over $1,000 — more than the entire five-year upkeep on most bags in this dataset — and it is charged again on the resale purchase for the next buyer. Any comparison of retail against resale that omits it overstates the case for buying new.
Does the Chanel Classic Flap still appreciate?
Not from today's prices. Chanel raised the medium Classic Flap from roughly $4,900 in 2016 to nearly $12,000, and the resale market did not follow at the same pace. A flap bought new now resells for around 80% of what it cost. The appreciation that gave the bag its reputation belonged to people who bought a decade ago at a third of the price.
Is it better to buy a handbag pre-owned?
For anything that resells below retail — which is most bags — buying pre-owned transfers the first owner's depreciation to them rather than to you, and it is the single largest saving available in this category. The exceptions are bags that trade above retail, where a boutique offer is worth more than the bag, and any purchase where a boutique relationship matters for future access.
